Stop Boerne City Council From Annexing 28 Acres For Flying J Truck Stop
A Truck Stop
on Main
Street?
The Pilot Flying J has plans to build a truck
stop right on N. Main Street. A new group has
been formed called Boerne Citizens Against Truck
Stops with the purpose of informing area citizens
about this issue and stopping this truck stop from
being built in Boerne. Please join us in supporting
sensible stewardship of the City of Boerne and the
surrounding areas.
It is imperative that all concerned area
citizens (especially those who live in Boerne city
limits) convince the Boerne City Council members to vote to delay or deny the current proposed annexation of the property located
on Main St (aka: 34 Shooting Club Rd) in order to first add a Truck Stop Specific Ordinance to Boerne’s Zoning Ordinance. You can
help by signing the petition and sending the City Council Members an email voicing your concerns at: ccouncil@ci.boerne.tx.us
Please be courteous in your communications. Link to petition: http://www.stoptruckstop.com/petition.htm
Before you dismiss this issue strongly consider some of the concerns many of our area citizens have expressed:
AREA WATER CONCERNS-according to various reports from the EPA and 5 State Attorney Generals, Pilot Flying J has a history of
lack of corporate responsibility, transparency when it comes to groundwater, run off pollution, fuel leaks, surface water and
drinking water contamination. While this property may be located far away from your home or business consider that it sits
300 ft from Cibolo Creek and nearly the entire city population is downstream from it. This truck stop will also use an enormous
amount of our water that is already restricted to area with more drought expected.
IMPACT OF INCREASED TRAFFIC TO OUR AREA-The Flying J plans to build a facility that can service 1,000 or more trucks per
day that will be going in and out of our city daily. This added traffic could cause increased traffic congestion and safety
concerns as some people that use the north exit will avoid it making other roadways more congested.
AIR AND NOISE POLLUTION-According to www.EPA.gov “Idling trucks emit significant amounts of pollution including carbon
dioxide, nitrogen oxide, volatile organic compounds, poisonous carbon monoxide and other particulate matter.” It has also
been identified that diesel particulate matter is a toxic air contaminate linked to increased illnesses such as lung cancer and
asthma. Flying J plans to install 90 spaces for idling overnight trucks. More trucks may park in surrounding areas if full like is
already happening at the new truck stop in Comfort at night. Truck stops are very loud places and this would greatly affect the
daily lives of the many folks that live and work in extremely close proximity to this proposed facility.
THE REAL POSSIBLITY OF INCREASED CRIME TO OUR AREA-Consider the alarming rate of well documented crime that occurs
at truck stops including; child sex trafficking, adult prostitution, murders, drug dealing/use, assault and other violent crimes. In
fact the FBI states that “There is a disturbing subculture occurring at truck stops.” They also state that “Child Sex Traffickers
are attracted to truck stops to market their product.” And lastly according to the FBI a string of serial murders is linked to long
haul truck drivers. The agency currently has over 500 unsolved cases of murder occurring on highways and have already
arrested over 25 of these killers. Again according to the FBI, “Long haul trucking is attractive to individuals inclined to kill due
to lack of supervision and access to victims.” The brand new truck stop in Comfort has already had 79 service calls according
to the Kendall Co Sheriff’s office. The vast majority of truckers are honest people just making a living and many truckers are
concerned for their own safety at truck stops according to comments made by concerned truckers on websites. Here are some
places that you can go to inform yourselves about these topics: www.FBI.gov, www.TIME.com, www.USA Today.com,
www.woai.com. Just type in “Truck Stops” in the search bar to find more information. Do we really want to bring even the
possibility of this type of crime to our city just 3 minutes from 2 of our schools?
It is our position that the many risks associated with a truck stop in our town far outweigh any economic benefit.
